It is easy to slip into cliches and abstractions when talking about cities.
To most people, Mumbai is - Overwhelming. It is to India, what New York would have been to the US back in the 20s. It takes that little leap of faith and dash of abandon to peel off the layers of cynicism the city surrounds itself with, and see the heart of gold.
I believe the book Shantaram, by an escaped Aussie convict (Gregory David Roberts, see www.shantaram.com) tells about Mumbai like no other book has so far. Jhonny Depp's making the movie as you read this.
